January 2021 - Court of Honor
Scoutmaster Minute
This is our second court of honor under COVID. I know that none of us ever expected that almost a year later, we would still be living under the cloud of COVID. This has not been easy and I am proud of all of you for being here and sticking with Scouting during one of the most difficult times most of us have ever seen.
To our Newer Scouts, I am particularly proud of you for contributing so much to our Troop without ever attending a live meeting. To our Future Scouts who will be crossing over soon, Thank you for choosing Troop 455 and we look forward to returning to normal and experiencing all that Scouting has to offer in 2021
The Chinese have a saying, “The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.” There’s a lesson for us in that. In Scouting, and in life, the rewards don’t come to those who sit back and wait for something to happen. You need to make it happen. I would like to see every one of you set the Eagle Scout rank as your goal in Scouting. As a step toward that goal, I challenge each of you to pick out some award you can earn for our next court of honor. Whatever the goal you set for yourself, remember that only you can take that first step toward it. No one can do it for you. Once you’ve taken that first step the next step becomes easier. And the ones after that will be easier still because you’re on the way along the Scouting trail.

January 2021 - Christmas Tree Pickup
Scouts gathered at the Church in early January to begin the Christmas Tree pick-up event. Despite the continued COVID restrictions, the Troop did well and collected a number of donations. The Troop also celebrated another Court of Honor to recognize the accomplishments of the hard working Scouts. Some scouts have participated in on-line Merit Badge classes, while others have found creative ways to perform community service.
December 2020 - Stretching our Legs
At the start of December, members of the Troop gather before heading off into the night for one of 4 planned hikes. The goal was to hike a minimum of 10 miles before the end of the month. Two of the hikes started from at Gary Grant Park Soos Creek Trailhead. Everyone had fun getting out of the house and talking face to face.
In mid December, Scouts handed out Christmas Tree pick-up flyers in the neighborhood. This event is one of the two largest fundraisers for the Troop. The trees were picked up the first weekend in January.

November 2020 - Veterans Day Community Service Project
On November 7th, many scouts met at Greenwood Memorial Park to participate in the Veterans Day Community Service Project. In this the Scouts placed flags on Veterans graves.
October 2020 - Shooting Sports Day
Some of the Scouts traveled east to Camp Pigott to participate in Shooting Sports Day. Opportunities included rifle, shotgun, archery, and tomahawk throwing. A number of scouts achieved their Marksman award at the event and many Scouts plan to attend the next event in March to work towards their Shooting Sports Merit badge.
September 2020 - Leadership Training
In September, the Scouts elected new leaders. Several leadership training events were scheduled. Due to COVID, most were zoom meetings. Everyone looks forward to being in person again.
